2016 Bookend...

2016 almost officially a wrap! What a VERY VERY WEIRD year!!!! Can't say it was completely good or completely terrible...just WEIRD! As an artist, I was able to create again after working a few years in a non-art related job (although, I tried as often as I could to squeeze some art & creativity in when I could). 2016 for me was a year of hope for advancement in my "day job" only to still be at the same place I was when I started the year. I am still optimistic & trying for advancement but it may be time for a career change in 2017 if things continue to remain stale and the same. I did a show for the first time in several years (3 Rivers Comicon 2016) and although I didn't really have a stellar show, it was refreshing to get back out and meet & greet folks who love comics as well as fellow creators. I don't care how old I get, I'm ALWAYS GOING TO LOVE & READ COMICS!!! I started posting again here on Blogger and at The Duck Webcomics site. Not sure if anyone is reading but I enjoy creating and posting so I'm going to continue to do so until it becomes boring or a hassle. I have ALOT of new pans on the fire so hopefully I can post here at the end of 2017 that it was a fantastic year with just a hint of weird....sometimes weirdness can be good or at least make things interesting. Stay tuned!

HACKED!

It happens to almost everyone sooner or later, but my blog was indeed hacked. Thanks to the good advice from the folks at Google it now fixed.
Hackers are the most irritating scumbag sub-humans on the face of the earth. They are like dirty little cockroaches that hide in the walls and scurry when the lights are turned on....and that's giving them too much credit. I'm back and so is my site. Happy days!

MARVEL NAH!

Don't get me wrong. I love Marvel Comics. Almost half of the comics in my 42+ year collection has the Marvel banner on them. The characters, the history, the artists...but....lately with the "Marvel Now!" stuff, I just can't get into any of them. Amazing Spider-Man was the first time I've picked up a Spidey book in quite a while and although I enjoyed the art, the story was kind of a let down. Their movies rock, their recent comics, to me, not so much.

The Field on the Edge of the Woods-Book: II

It was a long time coming, but "The Field on the Edge of the Woods-Book: II" is finally becoming a reality. A labor of love and many long hours at the drawing table. The result: a timeless tale worthy of the ages. Coming soon to an e-reader near you from Cloud 9 Comix! Written by Michael "Frick" Weber. Pencils by Gary Morgan. Inks by Loran Skinkis.

BANE!!!!!

My illustration of Bane from "The Dark Knight Rises". Great film.

The Bat-Man Chronicles

My idea for the next Batman movies. Similar to the 1960's Batman but without the "camp". Brutal hand -to-hand combat style Batman with the one director who has a proven track record in this style of film: Mr. Quentin Tarentino.

New DC Comics Logo in a Circle Rather than Rectangle

Here we are on "New Comic Book Day Eve" and I'm checking out the preview of Action Comics #8 on MTV Geek. I couldn't help notice that the "New DC logo" this month is placed in a black vertical rectangle. (Almost "Marvel Comics" like) Last month it was within a banner atop of all DC Comics promoting the "We Can Be Heroes" initiative. At first I wasn't a big fan of the new DC logo (as many were) when it was first announced. The images that initially appeared online seemed to be very "sterile" and "corporate. Since that time though, I've warmed up to the new logo and see it's potential. I can't wait to see how it is used/animated at the begining of "The Dark Knight Rises" this summer. The application of this logo for the April books in a vertical black box though just doesn't say to me "DC Comics are AWESOME!!!" I looked at it for a while, pondered, then threw together this mock-up version showing the DC Comics logo in a circle. The new DC logo in a circle is a nod to the past, while still keeping with the "New 52" style looking to the future with digital publishing and other electronic media applications. I posted this image to DC Comics on Twitter. Since the new logo is still in development, I wonder if they would consider something like I've done. (probably not, since they've probably spent a boatload of $$ developing the new logo and had focus groups aplenty give their input). Either way it was fun and I personally like it in a circle. -L.

Ghost Rider Friedrich Benefit....

Illustration by Gary Morgan and inks by Loran Skinkis (ME!) for a Gary Friedrich benefit book.

Looking at DC Comics "new" logo, I originally didn't like it. After seeing it with some color and some different variations I actually dig it. I thought though, since I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to my comics, that it needed some element to tie it to the older logos. My favorite DC logo is the "bullet" that appeared on DC Comics from the late 70's through the first decade of the 2000's so I added a "star" to the new logo just to see how it looks. Whaddya think?

Loran Skinkis Art

Loran Skinkis Art
I've always loved the iconic Joe Shuster illustration of Superman breaking the chains and I'm currently loving the new DC 52 version of Superman (even without the red trunks which I'm sure will make a triumphant return/media frenzy in the future). I combined the two and here's the result and the original. Not crazy about this, but it was a quickie.
